When X becomes your ex

As Twitter gives way to Elon Musk’s X, people are leaving in droves. Giving up on a social media platform can be painful, so to help you cope with the pain, here are the five stages of leaving X you need to prepare yourself for. (With tongue firmly in cheek, obviously).

1 – Denial

Give it a few months and things will settle down. He’s losing so much money, surely eventually he’ll have to fix things?

To be honest, after this long, and given the 2024 US election result,  is anyone still in this stage?

2 – Anger

I used to love this place. All my friends are here. Why did it all have to go south?

Furious retweeting of bad takes by nazis and conspiracies ensues.

3 – Bargaining

But we have to stay to debate the fascists. This is a sacrifice I am willing to make for the greater good – I WILL stand firm! Resist!

AKA – I have lots of followers. Please don’t make me do this again.

4 – Depression

Damn. I’m going to have to do this, aren’t I? No-one even sees my tweets anymore anyway (apart from WhiteSupremacist10327 who claims to know where I live).

5 – Acceptance

Hi Bluesky peeps. Gonna give this a try! Is anyone here?

Narrator’s voice: There were, in fact, many people there. Millions in fact.

An open invitation

So, if you want to jump straight to stage 5 and skip all the prevarication, do what I did. Deactivate X, uninstall the App and join the rapidly growing crowd on Bluesky. It’s all the good bits of original Twitter and very little of the bad stuff (so far). It also has over 15 million users at time of writing (15th November 2024) and that number is climbing rapidly..

Feel free to look me up there – I’m @jonayre.uk (yes – you can self-verify using your own domain name if you have one, and it doesn’t even cost $8). You might even find that all your old crowd has already moved in.

We’re in the good place.
